Hello! Glad you're here! Would you like to start the Devotional series from the begining?Click here.
Want to start here? Pray for God to speak directly to your current situation.
And then take a moment to read Mark Three.
No matter how much I wish that God was a strict formula, one that I could figure out, He doesn't work like that.
In the Book of Mark we have seen Jesus heal people and cast out demons a few times.
-Mark 1:21-27 Jesus healed a man who was "possessed by an evil spirit" just by saying,
"Come out of him!"
-Mark 1:29-31 Jesus healed Simon's mother by "taking her hand and helping her up."
-Mark 1:40-42 Jesus healed the man with leprosy by "reaching out His hand and touching the man."
-Mark 2:1-12 Jesus healed the paralytic man by "forgiving his sins."
And again in Mark 3.
This time the circumstances are different. Jesus is surrounded by people watching Him closely. They're not watching from amazement, but waiting for the moment Jesus breaks the law that had become so important to the culture at the time.
But Jesus cares more about healing a person than keeping religious traditions.
Jesus has mercy on the man with the shriveled hand.
At the same time that He was having mercy on someone, He was set out to teach others a lesson. I love that God is so smart that He can have multiple motives for one action and they're all one hundred percent pure and perfect.
Jesus wants to:
1. Heal the man
2. Teach the critics a lesson
And He accomplishes just that.
Rather than focusing on the critics, I want to focus on the healing.
Like I said before, I wish that Jesus' actions were more like a formula that I could figure out. But is it even cooler that I can't.
Join me in reading the end of verse 5. "(Jesus) said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored."
I love this because in order for the man to be healed he had to listen to Jesus' instruction and then act on it. The man with the injured hand had to take a step of faith in order to be healed--he had to stretch out his hand.
Do you have something plaguing you? Do you have something in your life that if it was just healed you could live life like everyone else? I do. I think we all do.
Listen to His voice and ask for the first step. Say, "God I'm plagued with _________ (doubt, insecurity, addiction to sin, lack of community, lack of rest, etc.). I need your help. Please, Holy Spirit, speak to me. Tell me my first step."
Stretching out a hand wasn't that hard. But with a bunch of Jesus-haters staring at you while you do it... that would make it harder. The man with the hand was in the synagogue. He must've known the same laws that the Pharisees did.
He stretched out his hand anyway.
Jesus, please help me (and the people on the other side of the screen) know our first step. Set us free in your love. Help us lay down our will and pursue Yours. We are sick of the weight. Take it off. Carry it for us. AMEN.
Here at Desperately Dependent, I write about how I need God much more than He needs me. I write about how living the Spirit Filled Life is changing me and the people around me. And how so many 'failures' and awkward situations arise from being a Christian Twenty Something.
